THE ELLIPTICAL HOUSE
This is a sculpture to live in. It was designed and
built by Nova to serve ecology, having a small
footprint on earth, and giving back land to nature.
It was made mostly of old recycled wood from a
demolished Brooklyn church - noble wood with its
own history. “I wanted this house to have a soul.”
The 2,800-square-foot two and a half-story space is
covered in modern fluted roofing to match the color
of the sky. The house is based, Nova says, on an
ecological idea: It's 40-by-40 at the widest point and
20-by-40 at the base, "which means we are giving
back half of the house to the planet." The interior is
original, playful and open to the surrounding
nature. There's a rough-hewn, sculptural quality
to much of the structure, with elegant accents -
elaborately carved and constructed doorways,
cantilevered stairs, lofts, “couchettes” and curved
kitchen cabinetry. The house also features Novas
handmade wooden furniture. The eye is delighted
and surprised wherever it looks. It is a well-known
landmark in the Hamptons.
