A new and noble global army of deep ecologists and integrators are now working for tools of survival. Visionary artists and architects could make a considerable contribution by designing new environments that function with minimal impact on Earth. Thirty five years ago, I started working on a new kind of architecture. My intention was to create an environment capable of bringing a deep change in the lives of people. Inspired by the cosmic ways of building structures, I thought to build cities that offered a new quality of life - I was seeking an alternative to "concrete jungle" cities that suffocate nature. I thought there must be a way to make peace with nature, to bring a quality of spirit, joy, and connectiveness . I wanted to conceive City Organisms - to help stop human progression towards becoming intelligent machines living in City - Machines. The Cities of Hyperspace will use the sphere as the basic building block in the belief that a sphere is an advantageous and exciting space for both private living and communal gatherings. A sphere is like a bubble of life; you feel protected, as if in a womb. There is a feeling of plenitude. The traffic of vibrations is optimal. The nervous system thrives . The sphere is also an ideal form for practical construction. A 40' diameter spherical habitat could offer 3 levels for living: the upper level could be a large covered terrace; the lower level would make a natural swimming pool. The standard habitats created from spheres will equalize the luxury apartments of today . These cities will be built like trees on earth, like islands on oceans and like galaxies in space. Their composition and function are designed to answer first to the joy of life, to help the traffic of the spirit and renew the values of the natural, eternal human. They will bring back the spirit of the village, of the tight community, and the environment of pure nature in a new modern magnificence. They will represent the all - time dream of humans to live with the majestic beauty of castles and cathedrals. The Earth City . These cities will look like colored mega - sculptures – a combination of art and architecture, what I call "integral Art." They will be gently embedded in the surface of the earth, barely touching it. Designed for a half - million people, this sizable city has a footprint of only a few square blocks, leaving virgin nature surrounding it . The Earth City has a vertical core with five circular malls for common human activities – commerce, sports, education, religion and art. Individual living habitats, what I call "cosmic bricks", make up the curved wings of the city. Everybody will enjoy a great view, light, air, whether they live up in the sky or near the Earth. Rooted deep in the earth like a tree, the underground spheres (seen in brown) are for waste recycling, energy generation and automated factory production. This will protect the atmosphere and help keep the surface of the planet in its pure state. Four cylindrical tubes, half - buried in the ground, connect to the other earth cities. Goods would be transported below ground. People would travel by high - speed moving highways in the above - ground portion, which is clear glass, giving in open and exciting ass travel experience. These cities are designed to be compact, keeping shared human activities in a functional closeness, like a modern village. The Cosmic City . Nova calls these "Hiltons in the Sky". Conceived for a few thousand people, they would initially function as space stations for travelers and research scientists, and eventually a longer - term space shelters . The "cosmic brick" habitats are modules that would be built in factories, launched from earth, and snapped together magnetically in space. As in the other city prototypes, the central core would be for common activities and individual habitats for private life. The city will offer two ways of being in space. An inner ring of habitats will rotate around the central core, providing the familiarity of gravity. The outer ring would be fixed, offering the sensations of weightlessness, a training experience necessary to adapt to long periods of living in space . Nova sees the Cosmic Cities in clusters of three, recreating the warm and reassuring sense of neighborhoods. They will look like luminous colored jewels against the dark background of space. The Ocean City Here we have a small island city. Colorful living habitats are on the incline, again offering light, air and view to all. Four sections of the city slope towards the ocean, forming colorful man - made beaches. Parks and restaurants line the perimeter, close to the water. An opening on the underside allows ships to dock beneath the city's dome. This is also the place where fish farming to feed the population would occur. Ideally, this floating city would be migratory, drifting slowly south during autumn and north again in spring to provide pleasant climate year - round.
